How is taking three years to publish a book you inherited indicative of “poor decisions”? Your choice of words seems to indicate that she purposely delayed it. You be Dykstra. Tell us what you’d do. It’s 2015/16 and the copyright just got transferred to you. You also are elderly and have a spouse who is dying. Go.

Ray published and distributed Mitchell’s pamphlet when he was alive. It’s not a stretch to assume that he had permission to include it in COC. That pamphlet had been largely forgotten and inclusion in COC would have done the writer a huge favour.

Dykstra indicated in a previous statement that the copyright did not transfer until 2015. Depends on what you would define as reasonable. An elderly woman whose spouse had been seriously ill for that time period which culminated in his death just this past year shouldn’t be expected to just drop everything because exJWs are clamouring for Ray’s book. If Dykstra is going to be critiqued for not getting outside help, then perhaps Ray and Cynthia Franz could be called out just the same way for letting the copyright fall to an aged woman who was ill-equipped to carry on a legacy and get it re-published. Evidently Ray Franz felt it was more important for his work to fall into the hands of his trusted friends than to hand it off to a younger and more pro-active party.

Ray sold Jon Mitchell’s pamphlet through Commentary Press and if I remember correctly he referenced it in the Christian Freedom book. The Franz estate might hold the copyright for the Mitchell pamphlet. As for Randy, there’s more to it than the fact he’s a Trinitarian. There was a bit of bad blood between them and Ray felt that Randy tried to upstage COC by releasing his pamphlet about what happened at Bethel in 1980. Interestingly Ray didn’t feel this way about Jon Mitchell’s work. At any rate, I believe the inclusion of the Mitchell piece as well as Dykstra’s addition (especially since she had been slandered and her motives questioned by the same person who violated the copyright) are appropriate. The foreword by Henke sounds a bit fishy though. Guess we’ll have to see how that ties in with Ray’s narrative.

Simon: I remember one of these “nobodies” going on exJW Reddit and comparing Dykstra to someone who was “sitting on stockpile of antibiotics in the midst of an epidemic”. Dykstra was also accused of being part of a “witch-hunt”. Unfortunately she had the misfortune of dealing with real antibiotics as she was taking care of an ill spouse who had lost his life just last year. You can read for yourself this complete disgrace here:

George Lucas tinkering with Star Wars films
by LoveUniHateExams injust thought i'd start a thread about lucas revisiting star wars films and making new edits - for better or for worse.. first off, let me say that george lucas has a tremendous imagination and star wars (1977), also known as episode 4: a new hope, and the empire strikes back (1980) - episode 5 in the franchise - are two of my favourite films.
.
as progress has been made in special effects, including the development of cgi, it makes sense for lucas to go back and retouch the spaceships, laser blasts and light sabres, improving what was 70s and 80s effects.. but i feel that lucas' tinkering has been a mixed bag - some have been bad choices, some unnecessary and others have been good.. what do you think ... .

Lucas already tinkered with the movies in the late 90’s. Like them, hate them, just please stop altering them. Move on to the next movie and next trilogy.

Trying to replace a celebrity President with another celebrity President is a very American thing to do. As I remember the American right didn’t really want him. So the American left is going to make the same mistake that the right did just to prove a point?

Hecce: Really? If that is true I think your friends are more Jehovah’s Witnesses than Latin Americans. Show anyone those pics of him in Venice scarcely 2 weeks after launching that crowdfund and you will get a lot of sarcasm and disbelief within the band of people I belong to.

The answer to that is simple. Read the thread again about him starting to write the book. When he was first writing it, he made it clear that he was going to try his hardest to get his book published by a publisher. He spoke about “sample chapters” to be sent to publishers and asked for advice from writers on this forum who have been published before. Of course people were encouraging him to do this.
What eventually happened was very different from how he presented it in that thread. Say if he had started the thread off thus:
“I want to write a book about JWs and my life. After much effort, no publisher has been willing to pick up and fund this endeavour of mine. I am quitting my job to focus on working on these books and videos fullltime. Therefore I am asking that all of you donate to me so I can make this happen. My second book will include the provision of having your story re-told and published by me for the discounted price of $150. You will also have your picture taken with me, Lloyd Evans, for paying for this “perk”. This is my way of rewarding many of you in my important work of saving JWs. To donate, please go to the website...”
Suffice it to say the response wouldn’t have been anywhere nearly as supportive as the thread you see there. Keep in mind that at the time he announced the book he was still proofreading his wife’s translation work for a living.

For those interested in the history behind him writing a book, he started the thread on this forum:
https://www.jehovahs-witness.com/topic/242781/ive-started-writing-my-book
What he was going to do was pull a “disfellowship me please” stunt in order to appeal to a publisher to give him an advance. In other words, write a book, get disfellowshipped, and then either write another book about that or include the latest info in a second edition. In short no one was interested and he quickly found he had to do it himself. Here he details how he would go under a pen name if he was forced to self-publish:
https://www.jehovahs-witness.com/topic/242781/ive-started-writing-my-book?page=8
So in a book he was marketing in part to people, many of whom did not want to get disfellowshipped in the first place and wish they weren’t, he was willing to put his status with the org on the line in order to sell books. When that didn’t work, he wanted them to give him his much desired “advance” he couldn’t get from a publishing company, which he did to the tune of over $20000 for the first book. Now he wants the same people to pay for another book that no publisher wanted a piece of.
